چکیده

Background. Transcutaneous measurement of carbon dioxide (TcCO2) provides a non-invasive estimation of arterial carbon dioxide (PaCO2). Nasal capnography (PE 0 CO2 ) is used to assess ventilation during monitored anaesthesia care (MAC) with sedation since it can readily detect apnoea. We compared the agreement between TcCO2 and PE 0 CO2 with PaCO2 and the ability to detect hypercarbia in patients under deep sedation.

Does end-tidal carbon dioxide monitoring detect respiratory events prior to current sedation monitoring practices?

OBJECTIVES The value of ventilation monitoring with end-tidal carbon dioxide (ETCO2) to anticipate acute respiratory events during emergency department (ED) procedural sedation and analgesia (PSA) is unclear. The authors sought to determine if ETCO2 monitoring would reveal findings indicating an acute respiratory event earlier than indicated by current monitoring practices. METHODS The study ...

SponTaneous Respiration using IntraVEnous anaesthesia and Hi-flow nasal oxygen (STRIVE Hi) maintains oxygenation and airway patency during management of the obstructed airway: an observational study

Background High-flow nasal oxygen (HFNO) has been shown to benefit oxygenation, ventilation and upper airway patency in a range of clinical scenarios, however its use in spontaneously breathing patients during general anaesthesia has not been described. Spontaneous respiration using i.v. anaesthesia is the primary technique used at our institution for tubeless airway surgery. We hypothesized th...

Is capnography mandatory during sedation for endoscopy?

Sedation during endoscopic procedures needs to ensure adequate tissue oxygenation, which depends on good cardiovascular and respiratory function. These parameters need to be monitored non-invasively as it is difficult to predict how a certain patient will respond to sedation. Tissue oxygenation is monitored using oximetry. Cardiovascular function is monitored by measuring blood pressure and pul...

Decrease in spectral entropy by low tidal volume ventilation-associated severe hypercapnia: a case report

Severe hypercapnia can be predicted by a decrease in cerebral electrical activity. The authors describe a sudden decrease in spectral entropy due to severe hypercapnia-induced respiratory acidosis in a patient with chronic pulmonary obstructive disease during lung resection. After two and a half hours of low tidal volume ventilation in the lateral position, the state entropy suddenly dropped fr...

Thorax 1987;42:801-808 Respiration during sleep in kyphoscoliosis

Eleven subjects with non-paralytic and 10 with paralytic kyphoscoliosis and nine normal control subjects were studied during sleep. The Cobb angle of those with kyphoscoliosis varied from 600 to 1400 (median 100°) and the vital capacity varied from 17% to 56% (median 28%) of the value predicted on the basis of span. Recordings made during sleep included expired carbon dioxide tension at the nos...
